The 4 Best Jeep Rooftop Tents

Camping and driving are like peas in a pod.

But what if you could like sleep in that pod and it didn’t involve being in a cramped back seat?

That’s why we’re here, to find you the perfect camping set up so you can be mobile and comfy in your Jeep!

Let’s take a look at 4 best rooftop tents for Jeeps:

1. Smittybilt Overlander Tent

How many people fit: The standard size sleeps 2-3, they offer an XL version which sleeps 3-4

The Smittybilt Overlander Tent is the one we reserve the phrase “big kahuna” for in this category.

It’s the top of the line, camp like you’re in a 5-star hotel option. Okay, maybe not all that but it’s up there.

This is at the very top of the price range, but it’s a well-made durable option if you plan on camping quite frequently out of your Jeep. A feature packed product, this has mosquito netting, a sunroof, a rain fly, led interior lights, and a ladder. Yes, a foam mattress is included.

You can go out in the middle of nowhere and still live the good life with a book inside your camper. As you can see from the picture, you’re going to need a roof rack to keep it level and attached.

Mounting brackets are included in the purchase. It is actually pretty heavy, which is a good sign usually. But, this thing comes in at 142 lbs. Don’t let that dissuade you though, most people can set this up and take it down within 20 minutes.

Overall, it’s a great value and a tribute to the phrase, “you get what you pay for”.

2. Raptor Series 100000-126800 Jeep Truck SUV Camping Rooftop Tent w/Ladder

How many people fit: This sleeps 2 Adults

Raptor Series has a half circle design tent with a sturdy reinforced frame.

If you want to be sure the elements aren’t going to toss you around, you can rest assured with the frame on this.

What’s the main benefit of this tent? In our opinion, it’s the quick setup. When you’re not using it, it folds in on itself and then you simply equip the included cover to shield it from the elements. Then when you stop to set up camp, take the cover off and retract it.

It’s equipped with a full mattress and rated at up to 750lbs. The retractable ladder extends up to 8 feet, so if you have a lifted ride you won’t have to worry about climbing up to your portable space.

As you can see from the picture, there is an awning overhang built into the design. SO you can leave this open while it’s raining and stay comfortable. This is at the medium end of the price range.

3. Tuff Stuff Ranger Overland Rooftop Tent with Annex Room

How many people fit: This sleeps 2 Adults in the top portion and potentially 2 more. (a Queen bed can fit in the annex room if you wish)

Do you like the finer things in life? Perhaps you like four wheeling, with a side of caviar?

We feel you, and so does Tuff Stuff with this Rooftop Tent that specializes in space.

The annex space can be converted to whatever you need. Potentially fitting a queen, lawn chairs, or a table set up. With an interior total space of 100 square feet, you’ll have more living space than most New Yorkers.

It is weather resistant, reportedly standing up to winds at 70mph. But, it’s probably not going to be a fun experience if you have to test that out. This will mount to any bed/roof rack.

The annex room doesn’t have to be set up, it’s just included in this purchase. If you don’t need it, it folds into a separate bag. When you do need it, you attach it to the existing tent with a zipper.

The top tent is rated at up to 685lbs. This is at the higher end of the price range for roof top tents, but some options in this category with the bells and whistles go for 3k. So, it’s a bargain compared to those.

If you end up purchasing this from Amazon, they require you to include your phone number so don’t forget!

4. Tepui Explorer Autana Rooftop Tent

How many people fit: This sleeps 3 Adults

Tepui-na matata. What a wonderful tent. This modern resort will keep you dry and toasty, with space to bear.

Tepui offers two colors for this model. Like most tents, the included annex is removable if you don’t need it.

This includes 4 pockets to keep your snacks dry on the inside. Yes a mattress is included, although some have reported it’s a bit hard. So perhaps look into getting yourself a topper if you like this one.

There are universal mounting brackets to attach to your roof rack. When not in use it folds down neatly onto your roof!

FAQS

Do I need a roof rack or cross bars to attach a roof top tent?

Yes, you will need a way to mount these to the top of your vehicle. Some vehicles have this option stock, others do not. If your Jeep does not have a roof rack system then you will need to purchase it separately.

Do these include mattresses?

Yes, all of these have mattresses included. Depending on your sleeping preference you may want to buy an additional mattress topper to get a softer slumber.
